This checklist focuses on the evidence that should survive each customer-onboarding handoff: what the receiving team gets, who owns the next action, what marks acceptance, how long the customer waits, and what unresolved exceptions remain.
For the full cross-functional audit method, use the Customer Onboarding Process Audit. For SaaS-specific onboarding diagnosis and the free onboarding screen, use the SaaS Customer Onboarding hub.
Why inspect onboarding handoffs?
Customer onboarding often spans Sales, Implementation, and Customer Success. Inspect the transfers between those teams: what information moves, who owns the next action, what marks acceptance, and where the customer may be waiting or repeating context.
Audit Components
A practical onboarding audit can examine:
- The fidelity of information passed from Sales to Implementation
- Time-to-first-value (TTFV) and the events used to define it
- Customer communication latency during the transition
- Explicit ownership, entry criteria, and exit criteria for each handoff
Choose Changes From the Evidence
Look for duplicate data entry, missing context, ambiguous ownership, or unnecessary waits before prescribing a fix. Where two systems require the same information, verify whether integration or a single source of truth can reduce re-entry without removing needed controls. Define explicit entry and exit criteria so each team can tell when responsibility has transferred. Use the cross-functional handoff checklist to record those criteria, the receiving owner, and unresolved exceptions.
